I wonder why the legislators are restricting themselves to a binary solution: resignation or impeachment. Cuomo will never resign, period. The rules around impeachment are, of course, murky and his lawyers will drag this out through the end of his term. Even if impeachment could be a celebrated, NY would be rudderless at a vulnerable time while the Lt. Governor learns the ropes in real time. Given that Cuomo is cornered, and he doesn't want an impeachment on his record. Why not force his hand to push through much needed changes that Cuomo's intractability has stalled? Cuomo still leaves office a disgraced man and NYers get traction on some badly needed reforms. Democrats need to be ruthlessly strategic for once.
I have heard the earliest rumblings — more from Cuomo allies — that perhaps he could try to negotiate to serve out the term without running for reelection. Not even sure he's willing to go that route, but perhaps it will emerge as he moves along the stages of grief from denial, then anger, to bargaining. For those who want him out early, it's just impeachment or resignation and, for the moment, he seems to be planning a fight that definitely could drag on.
The smart move, and one that 2022 voters will remember: negotiate a package that requires Cumo to:1) sign legislation he's dragged his feet on, 2) spend the billions in stimulus aid that he's sitting on, 3) elevate the Lt Gov to be the visible face of his administration, 4) agree not to run for reelection. The voters will understand hardball when 'they' benefit...they won't appreciate gridlock while Cuomo drags out litigation. Whh is strategy such an alien concept to Democrats?
