While there's no question that Hamas has used civilian shields in the past, the overwhelmingly disproportionate response by Israel is both punitive and inhumane. The Israeli government and military are so invested in their story that they fail to see that the world has shifted. They may win this battle but they've lost sizable support throughout the world. As with the US, Israel fails to learn the lessons of history, and the future is bleak for us both.
